Name: Calamagrostis nutkaensis - Argentina egedii - Juncus balticus Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is an estuarine high intertidal marsh that occurs along the outer coast of Washington, primarily around Grays Harbor and Willapa Bay, in the transition zone between uplands and estuarine intertidal. It occurs along upper tidal river and stream reaches where salinities are low and tidal inundation is infrequent. This densely vegetated association is dominated by the herbaceous species Calamagrostis nutkaensis (grass often >1 m tall), and the much shorter Juncus balticus and the forb Argentina egedii. The non-native Agrostis stolonifera is also typically codominant. Other common species include Angelica lucida, Heracleum maximum, and Sidalcea hendersonii. It is distinguished from other Washington salt marsh associations by the dominance or codominance of Calamagrostis nutkaensis.
