Name: Carex comosa - (Carex decomposita) Semipermanently Flooded Herbaceous Alliance Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group... Description: This alliance, found in the midwestern United States, is characterized by graminoid-dominated sinkholes. Vegetation composition and cover can be variable, depending on yearly and seasonal fluctuations in water depth. Typical dominants include Carex comosa, Carex decomposita, Glyceria acutiflora, Dulichium arundinaceum, Nuphar lutea, Scirpus spp., and Wolffia brasiliensis. Shrubs, especially Cephalanthus occidentalis, are sometimes present. Stands of this alliance are found in sinkholes and depressions of terraces and broad, level uplands, often in karst topography. The soils are very poorly drained, and surface water may be present for much of the growing season.
