Name: Sarcobatus vermiculatus / Sporobolus airoides Sparse Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association has been named from the Thunder Basin National Grassland of northeastern Wyoming, and it apparently also occurs along the North Platte and Sweetwater rivers in central Wyoming. Stands of this type occur on terraces with soils of fine to intermediate texture, high in salts other than sodium. Sarcobatus vermiculatus forms the shrub layer, and the undergrowth contains Sporobolus airoides (probably the most common species) and any of a number of other species, including Pascopyrum smithii, Elymus lanceolatus ssp. lanceolatus, and Distichlis spicata. Forbs generally contribute little cover, although several exotic forbs may be common.
