Name: Pinus contorta - (Picea mariana) / Vaccinium vitis-idaea / Hylocomium splendens - Pleurozium schreberi Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This matrix forest community is widespread in northeastern British Columbia, Alberta, and southwestern Yukon. It occurs on a wide variety of soils and parent materials where moisture levels are mesic to submesic (occasionally hygric) and nutrient regimes are commonly very poor to poor (sometimes mesic) in British Columbia and poor to medium in Alberta. These stands are characterized by a canopy of Pinus contorta var. contorta, often with Picea mariana, a moderate shrub layer of Ledum groenlandicum, and a dense cover of mosses dominated by Pleurozium schreberi with Hylocomium splendens and Ptilium crista-castrensis. The shrub layer often includes low cover of Rosa acicularis and Vaccinium myrtilloides. Other ground species commonly include a moderate cover of Cornus canadensis and Vaccinium vitis-idaea with lesser amounts of Linnaea borealis and Peltigera species.
