Name: Juglans major - Acer negundo / Rhus trilobata var. trilobata Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is found along the Lower Gila River (Grant County) and probably elsewhere in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona. This type is known from about 1830 to 2030 m (6000-6650 feet) elevation along the outer edges of floodplains on high terraces. Soils tend to be relatively dry, loamy or sandy, and rocky (Fluventic Ustochrepts and Haplustolls and Typic Ustifluvents). Juglans major and Acer negundo, both wetland indicators, form a closed canopy over a well-represented shrub layer dominated by Rhus trilobata var. trilobata. Brickellia californica occasionally codominates. The herbaceous-layer diversity is moderate (25 species recorded for the type), but sites may contain many ruderal or weedy species common to nearby agricultural lands. Acer negundo was indicated as a major tree associate in the Juglans major Community Type of Szaro (1989), along with Rhus trilobata var. trilobata in the shrub layer.
