Name: Rubus parviflorus Shrubland Alliance
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: These shrublands occur in mesic subalpine and upper montane meadows in the northern Cascade Mountains in Washington. Elevations range from 1500-1800 m. The climate is maritime-influenced with deep winter snowpack. These dense shrublands are often extensive, occupying broad, steep (60%), south-facing colluvial slopes, as well as smaller avalanche chutes. Sites are very well-drained and are typically snow-free between April and May. Substrates are moderately deep to deep, loamy, residual or regosolic soils with pH of 5.0-5.6. The soil parent material is mica schist. The upper canopy is a moderately dense to dense short-shrub layer that is dominated by the cold-deciduous shrub Rubus parviflorus. The lush, tall herbaceous layer is typically dense and is codominated by the perennial forb Chamerion angustifolium (= Epilobium angustifolium) and the fern Pteridium aquilinum var. pubescens. There is also moderate cover or high frequency of Valeriana sitchensis, Viola glabella, Heracleum maximum, Thalictrum occidentale, Hydrophyllum occidentale, Veratrum viride, and lower cover and frequency of Polygonum bistortoides, Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus (= Lupinus latifolius var. subalpinus), Lathyrus nevadensis, Eucephalus engelmannii (= Aster engelmannii), and Saussurea americana. Graminoids, such as Elymus hirsutus, Bromus carinatus, and Carex spectabilis, are quite common. Adjacent vegetation includes subalpine forests dominated by Abies amabilis or Abies concolor.
