Name: Salix irrorata / Carex rostrata Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is found in the Upper Mimbres River watershed and upper Rio Grande in southwestern and north-central New Mexico, respectively. Preliminary data suggest that this type occurs on narrow depositional bars along high-gradient mountain streams at elevations ranging from 1980 to 2250 m (6500-7400 feet). These sites are probably annually flooded, and hence soils are relatively wet (wetness ranks of 2) and have been reported as sandy-skeletal, Typic Fluvaquents and riverwash. Salix irrorata is well-represented to abundant, while other shrubs are few and scattered. Populus angustifolia or Populus deltoides regeneration is usually present. The undergrowth is dominated by Carex rostrata along with other native graminoid wetland indicators such as Carex microptera, Elymus trachycaulus, Glyceria striata, and Juncus longistylis. Forbs are diverse and variable; 41 have been recorded for the type, 30 of which are native. Common wetland forbs include Epilobium ciliatum, Equisetum arvense, Equisetum laevigatum, Lycopus americanus, Mentha arvensis, Mimulus guttatus, Prunella vulgaris, and Rudbeckia laciniata.
