Name: Quercus velutina - Quercus coccinea - Carya texana Ozark Forest
Reference: Midwestern Ecology Working Group...
Description: This oak - hickory forest community is found in the United States in the Ozarks of southeastern Missouri and possibly northeastern Arkansas. Stands occur on dry slopes, with thin soils and primarily a cherty bedrock near the surface. The canopy is dominated by Quercus velutina, Quercus coccinea, and Carya texana. Other associates and understory characteristics have yet to be described, but Quercus alba may also be present, along with minor amounts of Pinus echinata and shrubs such as Vaccinium arboreum. Sources indicate that this type primarily occurs on former Pinus echinata woodland sites that were completely logged, then grazed and burned, leading to a degraded oak forest.
