Name: Dodecatheon redolens - Aquilegia formosa Herbaceous Vegetation Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This herbaceous association is restricted to minimally disturbed springs and seeps on the eastern slopes of the Spring Mountains of southern Nevada between 2015 and 3160 m (6611-10,367 feet) elevation. Sites occupy moderate slopes (average 18 degrees) on sedimentary substrates, on every aspect except west. The association is limited to seeps that are not associated with streams, with soils that are moist to saturated at the surface. Most occurrences are dominated by a high cover of herbaceous species, but several examples included in this association have an open canopy of either Abies lasiocarpa or Juniperus scopulorum. Moderate to high cover of Dodecatheon redolens (= Dodecatheon jeffreyi var. redolens) and Aquilegia formosa are consistent indicators of this association, although other species may be codominant to dominant. Other commonly associated herbaceous species include Carex aurea, Deschampsia caespitosa, Platanthera sparsiflora, Angelica kingii, and Maianthemum stellatum (= Smilacina stellata). Moss provides significant cover in several sites.
