Name: NY Heritage: Successional fern meadow
Reference: Ecological Communities of New York, 2nd Ed.
Description: A meadow dominated by ferns that occurs on sites that have been cleared (for logging, farming, etc.) or otherwise disturbed. Characteristic ferns that may be dominant include bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) and hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula); blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium, V. pallidum) are common associates. This community may be relatively short-lived; it gradually succeeds to a blueberry heath or a forest community. More data on this community are needed.
