Name: Populus deltoides / Sporobolus cryptandrus Woodland
Reference: Carsey et al 2003b
Description: The Populus deltoides/Sporobolus cryptandrus (plains cottonwood/sand dropseed) riparian woodland occurs on sandy soils along the Arkansas River stream banks and floodplain. The cottonwood trees are large and create an near-continuous overhead canopy. There are few native shrubs, creating an open, park-like structure. Unfortunately, Tamarix ramosissima (tamarisk) has become a thick subcanopy in many stands along the lower Arkansas River in Colorado. Known from Bijou Creek, a tributary to the South Platte River, from the Arkansas, Purgatory, and Big Sandy Rivers, and a small canyon tributary (Sand Canyon) on southeastern Colorado plains.
