Description: This community occurs on gentle slopes in the eastern Edwards Plateau of central Texas, generally over soils in the Adobe range site (Doss and Ekrant calcareous clay loam soils). The canopy is usually dominated by a combination of Quercus fusiformis (plateau oak), Quercus buckleyi (Buckley oak), and Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm). Other canopy species include Celtis laevigata (sugarberry). Quercus stellata (post oak) and Quercus marilandica (blackjack oak) may be present, especially close to the boundaries with coarser soils. Canopy density depends on the disturbance history (especially fire) of the site. With long-term fire suppression, Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) can become a canopy dominant. Characteristic understory species include Cercis canadensis var. texensis (Texas redbud), Forestiera pubescens (stretchberry), Sideroxylon lanuginosum (gum bully), Diospyros texana (Texas persimmon), Rhus trilobata (skunkbush sumac), Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), and Lonicera albiflora (western white honeysuckle). Rhus lanceolata (prairie sumac) and Baccharis neglecta (Rooseveltweed) may be abundant, especially after recent disturbance. Herbaceous cover is high when the tree canopy is relatively open, but declines with invasion by Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper). Understory grasses include Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem), Bouteloua hirsuta (hairy grama), Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama), Nassella leucotricha (Texas tussockgrass), Aristida purpurea (purple threeawn), and Aristida oligantha (prairie threeawn). Forbs are diverse (though cover may be low) and include Liatris mucronata (cusp blazing star), Stillingia texana (Texas toothleaf), Symphyotrichum ericoides (white heath aster), Hedyotis nigricans (diamondflowers), Monarda citriodora (lemon beebalm), and Salvia texana (Texas sage).
