Description: This woodland association occurs over deep sands that have developed over the Paluxy Formation on the Edwards Plateau and adjacent areas in the Crosstimbers region of Texas. The canopy is dominated by Quercus stellata (post oak) and sometimes Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm). Other woody species include Forestiera pubescens (stretchberry), Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), Prosopis glandulosa (honey mesquite), Zanthoxylum hirsutum (Texas Hercules' club), Prunus mexicana (Mexican plum), Sideroxylon lanuginosum (gum bully), Prunus umbellata (hog plum), Rhus trilobata (skunkbush sumac), Smilax bona-nox (saw greenbrier), Celtis laevigata var. reticulata (netleaf hackberry), Vitis mustangensis (mustang grape), Cissus trifoliata (sorrelvine), and Opuntia engelmannii (cactus apple). Herbaceous openings may contain Nassella leucotricha (Texas tussockgrass), Sporobolus cryptandrus (sand dropseed), Eragrostis sessilispica (tumble lovegrass), Aristida purpurea (purple threeawn), Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem), Oenothera laciniata (cutleaf evening-primrose), Melampodium leucanthum (plains blackfoot), Bothriochloa ischaemum (yellow bluestem), Verbena halei (Texas vervain), and Tetraneuris scaposa (stemmy four-nerve daisy).
