Description:
This woodland occurs over shallow soils, on limestone mesatops, typically underlain by the Fredricksburg Group in the Edwards Plateau of Texas. The association is dominated by Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) and Quercus sinuata var. breviloba (bastard oak). Height and density of the vegetation can range from an open woodland to a forest. When canopy cover is high, Quercus sinuata var. breviloba (bastard oak) is sometimes limited to the understory. Other woody species include Fraxinus texensis (Texas ash), Quercus fusiformis (plateau oak), Quercus buckleyi, Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm), Ilex decidua (possumhaw), Diospyros texana (Texas persimmon), Rhus virens (evergreen sumac), Rhus trilobata (skunkbush sumac), Forestiera pubescens (stretchberry), Yucca pallida (twistleaf yucca), Mahonia trifoliolata (algerita), Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), Lonicera albiflora (western white honeysuckle), Sophora secundiflora (mescal bean), Ungnadia speciosa (Mexican buckeye), and Cercis canadensis var. texensis (Texas redbud). With the exception of Fraxinus texensis (Texas ash), which may occasionally be a canopy dominant, cover of these other species is generally very low. Herbaceous cover is sparse, especially when canopy density is high, and may include Carex planostachys (cedar sedge), Lespedeza texana (Texas lespedeza), Tragia ramosa (branched noseburn), Matelea (milkvine) spp., Rhynchosia senna (Texas snoutbean), Commelina erecta (whitemouth dayflower), Sporobolus compositus (composite dropseed), and Galactia volubilis (downy milkpea). Adjacent associations include Quercus fusiformis / Schizachyrium scoparium Woodland (CEGL002115) on slightly deeper soils, as well as Quercus buckleyi - Fraxinus texensis - Juniperus ashei Forest (CEGL002135) and Juniperus ashei - Quercus buckleyi Woodland (CEGL004172) on adjacent slopes.
