Description: This community is found on deeper soils on the Edwards Plateau and is the result of disturbance. Dominant shrubs include Rhus lanceolata (prairie sumac) and Baccharis neglecta (Rooseveltweed). Understory species are usually characteristic of disturbed grasslands and may include Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem), Bothriochloa ischaemum (yellow bluestem), Nassella leucotricha (Texas tussockgrass), Bouteloua hirsuta (hairy grama), Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama), Gutierrezia (snakeweed) spp., Ambrosia (ragweed) spp., and Grindelia lanceolata (narrowleaf gumweed). This community may result after Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) [see Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) Semi-natural Forest (CEGL004159)] is cleared from a former grassland by mechanical means or by fire. It may also succeed to this community over time if it is not returned to a grassland state with the application of fire or other management activity to control woody growth.
