Name: Quercus durata - Arctostaphylos glandulosa Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at relatively high elevations (725-770 m [2370-2530 feet]) of Mount Tamalpais on mid to upper third of moderate to steep, rocky, southeast- to southwest-facing slopes. Soil textures are coarse loamy sand from serpentine rocks. This association forms dense stands that are dominated by Quercus durata and Arctostaphylos glandulosa in the shrub layer. Often found in this association are Iris douglasiana, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Frangula californica, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Eriodictyon californicum, and Baccharis pilularis. Trees in this association may include shrubby Umbellularia californica and young or emergent Pseudotsuga menziesii. Other species that contribute to minor cover may include Quercus chrysolepis, Pteridium aquilinum, Ceanothus cuneatus, and Arctostaphylos virgata.
