Name: Pinus rigida - Hudsonia tomentosa - Pityopsis falcata Sparse Vegetation
Reference: Eastern Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This community is currently known only from Rhode Island, where large expanses of bare sand occur on inland dunes. Vegetation is sparse, characterized by very stunted Pinus rigida (10 cm tall), Hudsonia tomentosa, Pityopsis falcata, and lichens. The cause of sand exposure is not known with confidence, as the two currently known occurrences are in different environmental settings. One is adjacent to a river and may be the result of past flooding events. The other occurrence is on an island in Narragansett Bay.
