Name: Schinus terebinthifolius / Pennisetum setaceum Ruderal Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This semi-natural woodland is currently sampled from a single national historical park in Hawaii, and this description is based on occurrences there. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found on flat, very low-elevation (almost sea level) sites. The substrate is both a'a and pahoehoe lava. This association has a highly variable tree canopy of Schinus terebinthifolius 2-10 m tall. There is a very sparse shrub layer, with Leucaena leucocephala being the most common species. The herbaceous stratum is typically well-established; Pennisetum setaceum is nearly the only species present.
