Name: Pithecellobium dulce Ruderal Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This semi-natural woodland is currently sampled from a single national historical park in Hawai'i, and this description is based on occurrences there. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found on midslopes, lowslopes, and low level areas with gentle to no slope. All sites are over recent lavaflows. This community is typically a short, open woodland dominated by the introduced species Pithecellobium dulce, with few other species occurring frequently at lower elevations. At upper elevations, Schinus terebinthifolius is common in the subcanopy. Morinda citrifolia may codominate. The shrub canopy is absent to sparse; Passiflora suberosa and Lantana camara are the most common taxa found in the shrub strata. Some stands have significant cover of Leucaena leucocephala in the shrub layer. The herbaceous stratum is fairly diverse. Urochloa maxima and Talinum triangulare are usually present. Bidens pilosa, Commelina benghalensis, and Kalanchoe pinnata are commonly encountered.
