Name: Yucca schidigera - Larrea tridentata - Ambrosia dumosa Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This yucca shrubland association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It typically occurs on sideslopes, but can occur on ridges, plateaus, and in drainage channels, at 550 to 600 m (1825-1975 feet) elevation, but can be found as high as 650 m (2175 feet). It is typically found on low gradients (2-10°), but occasionally occurs on steeper slopes (up to 20°), and seems to favor south- or east-facing aspects. Soils are well- to rapidly-drained silty or sandy clays or loams. Vegetation is characterized by the dominance of Larrea tridentata in the tall-shrub stratum, Yucca schidigera in the short-shrub stratum, and Ambrosia dumosa in the dwarf-shrub stratum. No other tall shrubs occur regularly. Tthe short-shrub layer usually includes Krameria grayi and occasionally Psorothamnus fremontii. The cactus Opuntia basilaris occurs sporadically in the dwarf shrub-layer. Vulpia octoflora, Bromus rubens, and Schismus barbatus are common in a very sparse graminoid understory. Cryptantha spp., Plantago ovata, Antheropeas lanosum, Phacelia crenulata, and Erodium cicutarium are all frequently present in a well-developed forb layer.
