Name: Psorothamnus fremontii Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This Fremont's smokebush shrubland association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument in Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It typically occurs in drainage channels, on sideslopes, and rarely in valley bottoms or on badlands at 375 to 675 m (1250-2225 feet) elevation, but can be found as high as 1150 m (3750 feet). It is primarily found on gentle slopes (1-12°), but can also occur on steeper gradients (25-30°), and occurs across all aspects. Soils are mostly well-drained sandy or silty loams derived from various parent materials. Vegetation is dominated by the short shrub Psorothamnus fremontii. Larrea tridentata is commonly found in a very sparse tall-shrub layer. The short-shrub stratum also occasionally includes Krameria grayi and Hymenoclea salsola. Ambrosia dumosa and Opuntia basilaris frequently occur in a weak dwarf-shrub layer. Graminoid cover is quite sparse, but Vulpia octoflora and Dasyochloa pulchella may occur in some stands. Eriogonum inflatum regularly occurs in the forb understory, while Cryptantha sp., Antheropeas lanosum, Plantago ovata, and Phacelia crenulata occur sporadically.
