Name: Atriplex obovata Talus Dwarf-shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This saltbush dwarf-shrubland association is currently described from Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona. More survey and classification work are needed to fully characterize this type. It occurs on talus sideslopes at 975 to 1150 m (3225-3775 feet) elevation, and is typically found on moderate to steep (15-40°), south- or southeast-facing slopes. Soils are rapidly drained silty or sandy loams that usually overlie limestone or sandstone bedrock. Vegetation is characterized by the dominance of Atriplex obovata in the short-shrub stratum. Tall shrubs are absent. Ephedra torreyana also regularly occurs in the short-shrub layer. A fairly sparse dwarf-shrub layer exists, in which Opuntia basilaris, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Brickellia atractyloides may sporadically occur. Bromus rubens and Muhlenbergia porteri are frequently present in a well-developed graminoid layer that is typically dominated by non-native annuals. Dasyochloa pulchella and Sporobolus sp. also commonly occur. Cryptantha sp., Thymophylla pentachaeta, Machaeranthera pinnatifida, Lepidium sp., and Phacelia crenulata are common components of the forb understory.
