Name: Prosopis velutina / Eragrostis lehmanniana Ruderal Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland is described from the foothills of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona. Plot data indicate elevations of 970-1140 m (3180-3730 feet) where it is found on valley floors, swales, ridges, alluvial fans and foothills. Stands occur on gentle to moderate toeslopes and midslopes on all aspects. Substrates are typically well-drained sandy loam. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense (over 25% cover) tall-shrub canopy that is dominated by Prosopis velutina (15% or more cover). A moderately dense, mixed short-shrub layer may be present. Associated tall and short shrubs may include Acacia greggii, Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Isocoma tenuisecta, Lycium spp., and Opuntia versicolor. The moderately dense to dense (40-90% cover) herbaceous layer is dominated by Eragrostis lehmanniana with over 25% cover or over a third of the total perennial graminoid cover. In some stands, the herbaceous layer is strongly dominated by Eragrostis lehmanniana with little else, while other stands have good species diversity but with typically relatively low cover. Common species include Abutilon incanum, Aristida ternipes, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua repens, Bouteloua rothrockii, Croton pottsii, Digitaria californica, Gutierrezia microcephala, Kallstroemia grandiflora, Muhlenbergia porteri, Portulaca oleracea (= Portulaca retusa), and Talinum aurantiacum.
