Name: Prosopis velutina Foothill Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland is described from the foothills of Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge in southern Arizona. Plot data indicate an elevation range of 915-1170 m (3000-3840 feet) and that stands are found on flat to moderately steep slopes, often on southerly aspects. Substrates are typically well-drained sandy loam, with 0-40% cover of surface rock. The vegetation is characterized by an open to dense (25-80% cover) tall-shrub canopy dominated by Prosopis velutina with 20% or more cover, but includes more open shrublands if herbaceous cover is sparse. Mixed short shrubs are often present and are often dense enough to form open to moderately dense strata. Associated tall and short shrubs may include Acacia greggii, Calliandra eriophylla, Celtis pallida, Ferocactus wislizeni, Fouquieria splendens, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Isocoma tenuisecta, Opuntia engelmannii, Opuntia versicolor, Simmondsia chinensis, and Ziziphus obtusifolia. The herbaceous layer is sparse to dense (10-90% cover) and typically dominated or codominated by graminoids. Associated species are Aristida ternipes, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua gracilis, Bouteloua rothrockii, Digitaria californica, and Setaria vulpiseta (= Setaria macrostachya). Forbs often have high species richness but with typically relatively low cover. Some frequent species are Abutilon incanum, Evolvulus alsinoides, Gutierrezia microcephala, Portulaca suffrutescens, and Talinum aurantiacum.
