Name: Mimosa dysocarpa / Bouteloua curtipendula Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland is described from slopes of foothills, ridges and mountain canyons in southern Arizona. Plot data from Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge indicate an elevational range of 1140-1400 m (3750-4600 feet). Sites are somewhat steep to steep. Substrates are variable but are typically shallow rocky sandy loam to loam soils. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense (20-30% cover) short-shrub layer dominated by Mimosa dysocarpa. Tall shrubs of Prosopis velutina may be present but are generally too sparse to form a shrub layer (<10%). Associated shrubs and succulents include Agave palmeri, Agave schottii, Calliandra eriophylla, Dasylirion wheeleri, Dodonaea viscosa, Eriogonum wrightii, Erythrina flabelliformis, Eysenhardtia orthocarpa, Mimosa aculeaticarpa var. biuncifera (= Mimosa biuncifera), Opuntia engelmannii, Opuntia spinosior, and Opuntia versicolor. The herbaceous layer ranges from sparse to dense and typically has high species richness of forbs (>25 species). Cover is generally dominated by mixed graminoids with abundant Bouteloua curtipendula. Associated graminoids are Eragrostis intermedia, Heteropogon contortus, Leptochloa dubia, and Muhlenbergia porteri. Forbs with high frequency are Bidens leptocephala, Boerhavia coccinea, Astrolepis sinuata (= Notholaena sinuata), Euphorbia heterophylla (= Poinsettia heterophylla), Portulaca umbraticola, and Sida abutifolia. If present, Eragrostis lehmanniana has low cover (less than 25% cover and less than a third of the total perennial graminoid cover).
