Name: Fouquieria splendens Shrubland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This shrubland occurs in southern Arizona, typically on gentle to moderate slopes of ridges, foothills and mountain canyons. Sites may occur on any aspect but are typically found on warmer southern and western aspects. Plot data from Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge indicate elevations of 1150-1250 m (3700-4100 feet) on well-drained sandy loam. Substrates are rocky with 50% surface rock. The vegetation is characterized by an open (30% cover) tall-shrub canopy dominated by <i>Fouquieria splendens</i> (10% or more cover). If present, <i>Prosopis velutina</i> has low cover (&lt;10%) and does not codominate the tall-shrub layer. A low-shrub layer of <i>Calliandra eriophylla</i> (&lt;20% cover), <i>Tiquilia mexicana (= Coldenia mexicana), Ferocactus wislizeni</i>, and <i>Mimosa aculeaticarpa var. biuncifera (= Mimosa biuncifera)</i> may be present. The herbaceous layer is sparse (about 10% cover) and dominated by mixed perennial graminoids. Characteristic species are <i>Aristida ternipes, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula</i>, and <i>Setaria vulpiseta (= Setaria macrostachya)</i>. Other common species include <i>Evolvulus</i> spp., <i>Gutierrezia microcephala, Krameria erecta</i>, and <i>Talinum aurantiacum</i>. <i>Eragrostis lehmanniana</i> may be present but at less 25% cover and less than a third of the total perennial graminoid layer.  Accession Code: VB.CC.31864.CEGL004452 Plot-observations of this Community Concept: 0
