Name: Juglans major - Prosopis velutina Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This riparian tall shrubland/woodland occurs in southern Arizona and likely northern Mexico at elevations below 1200 m (3930 feet). Stands are found on gentle slopes along drainages and in floodplains on valley floors. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense to dense tall-shrub/tree canopy codominated by Juglans major and Prosopis velutina. Other tree species such as Celtis laevigata var. reticulata (= Celtis reticulata) may be present but do not codominate. Vines such as Vitis arizonica may have significant cover. Scattered shrubs such as Baccharis spp. and Hymenoclea monogyra may be present, but generally at low cover, and may or may not be dense enough to form strata. The herbaceous layer is generally sparse because of the dense tree canopy and is usually dominated by a mixture of grasses and forbs. The native annual forb Amaranthus palmeri may be present but does not codominate the herbaceous layer. Other herbaceous species reported include Bidens leptocephala and Boerhavia coccinea. If present, cover of Eragrostis lehmanniana is relatively low with less than 25% cover and less than one-third total perennial graminoid cover.
