Name: Sorghum halepense - (Amaranthus palmeri) Ruderal Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This vegetation type occurs on valley floor at Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Arizona, and elsewhere in the desert southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico where disturbance by sorghum cultivation for forage production has converted what was likely natural desert grasslands. Sites are typically flat to gently sloping basins and flats that may be intermittently flooded. Soils are variable but typically finer textured silt loam or clays. The vegetation is characterized by a relatively sparse to dense herbaceous layer dominated or codominated by the exotic, perennial forage grass Sorghum halepense. The native annual forb Amaranthus palmeri often codominates. Associated species are sometimes many and include scattered Prosopis velutina shrubs and grasses and forbs such as Chenopodium berlandieri, Chloris virgata, Eragrostis cilianensis, Eragrostis pectinacea, Eriochloa acuminata, Ipomoea spp., Kallstroemia grandiflora, Leptochloa panicea ssp. brachiata (= Leptochloa filiformis), Salsola kali, and Solanum elaeagnifolium.
