Name: Juniperus osteosperma / Mahonia fremontii Woodland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This woodland association is know only from Canyonlands National Park and Glen Canyon National Recreation Area but likely occurs elsewhere on the Colorado Plateau in Utah. Stands occur on the deep soils of plateaus, stream terraces, benches, and wash banks. Sites are on flat to gentle slopes between 1362 and 1865 m elevation. Bare soil or litter cover most of the unvegetated surface, depending on density of the vegetation and degree of disturbance. Dead wood and biological soil crusts provide sparse to moderate cover. Soils are rapidly drained sandy loams or loamy sands derived from alluvium or eolian deposits. The vegetation is characterized by an open canopy, typically 2 to 5 m tall, of <i>Juniperus osteosperma</i> with 6 to 30% cover, and an understory dominated by <i>Mahonia fremontii</i> with 3 to 12% cover; total vegetation cover ranges from 23 to 61%. Associated shrubs include <i>Rhus trilobata, Ephedra viridis, Atriplex canescens, Symphoricarpos longiflorus, Yucca angustissima</i>, and <i>Gutierrezia sarothrae</i>. Herbaceous species provide sparse cover and may include <i>Achnatherum hymenoides, Pleuraphis jamesii, Aristida purpurea, Sporobolus airoides, Machaeranthera canescens</i>, and <i>Lepidium montanum var. jonesii</i>.
