Name: Conyza canadensis Ruderal Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This semi-natural herbaceous association is described from only Curecanti National Recreation Area but likely is more widely distributed in mesic, disturbed sites. Stands occur in the drawdown zone of Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is exposed during the summer, and occupy the entire slope of the exposed reservoir shoreline in addition to narrow areas above the ordinary high water line. Sites are moderately steep (18-25% slopes) and occur between 2284 and 2300 m elevation. The unvegetated surface is predominantly cobble, gravel, and sand. Soils are sandy and well-drained when not inundated by the reservoir. The vegetation is characterized by a sparse to moderately vegetated (to 35% cover) herbaceous layer dominated by the tall forb Conyza canadensis. The herbaceous layer is low in diversity and consists of concentric bands of vegetation, with Conyza canadensis occupying the area at and above the ordinary high water line and Chenopodium album occupying the area at and below the ordinary high water line to the water's edge. Other commonly associated forbs present and contributing low to moderate cover include Chenopodium glaucum, Lactuca serriola, Melilotus officinalis, Salsola tragus, Rorippa palustris ssp. hispida, and Verbascum thapsus. The only graminoid observed on the reservoir drawdown zone is Hordeum jubatum, which provides low cover.
