Name: Mahonia fremontii Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland is only known from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and occurs on washbanks or terraces 2 to 3 m above the channel. The slope of the sampled stand is moderate, oriented to the south and lies at 1575 m elevation. Exposed soil covers most of the unvegetated surface, with low cover by litter. A well-developed biological soil crust community covers more than half the sampled plot. The soil is a rapidly drained silt loam derived from alluvium rich in shale. This unusual shrubland is rare and was only sampled within the recreation area. Total vegetation cover is 24%. Mahonia fremontii shrubs form an open canopy with 10% cover. Associated shrubs include Ericameria nauseosa, Ephedra viridis, Atriplex canescens, and Gutierrezia sarothrae. Herbaceous species contribute low cover and may include Sporobolus airoides, Pleuraphis jamesii, Achnatherum hymenoides, Bromus tectorum, Artemisia ludoviciana, and Comandra umbellata. Biological soil crust cover was moderate to high (51%).
