Name: Platanus wrightii / Brickellia californica Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is found in the Gila River watershed in southwestern New Mexico and probably in southeastern Arizona. Preliminary data suggest that this community can be expected to occur in smaller lowland drainages at around 1460 m (4800 feet) elevation. Sites are likely to be upper terraces which are infrequently flooded (10+ years estimated recurrence interval). Soils have been described as relatively dry Typic Ustifluvents with a cobbly matrix. Platanus wrightii is usually the sole overstory tree forming a moderately closed canopy. In the undergrowth, upland shrubs such as Brickellia californica dominate, but Baccharis salicifolia, a wetland indicator, are usually present. Upland grasses are common to well-represented in the understory and may include Aristida ternipes, Sporobolus cryptandrus, and Bouteloua curtipendula. Platanus wrightii / Baccharis salicifolia CT (New Mexico state type) is known to occur on adjacent lower bars towards the river.
