Name: Pinus contorta / Cornus sericea Woodland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This woodland association is found on cool, moist sites in the mountains of the northern Rocky Mountains of western Montana and southern Alberta. This community occurs from 823 to 1628 m (2700-5340 feet) in elevation across its range. It is restricted to flat or gently sloping alluvial terraces or benches and, less frequently, moist toeslopes. Stands may be temporarily flooded in the spring, and due to the location in riparian zones, the water table is usually within 1 m of the surface. Water flow and aeration in the rooting zone are usually good. The vegetation is characterized by an overstory tree canopy dominated by <i>Pinus contorta</i>. <i>Populus tremuloides, Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa</i>, or <i>Betula papyrifera</i> are often present in the canopy. <i>Picea engelmannii</i> may be present in the understory but does not form a significant part of the tree canopy. Shrub cover is typically high, with <i>Cornus sericea</i> usually the dominant shrub. Other shrubs such as <i>Acer glabrum, Alnus incana, Amelanchier alnifolia, Linnaea borealis, Ribes lacustre, Rosa woodsii, Rubus parviflorus</i>, various <i>Salix</i> spp., <i>Shepherdia canadensis</i>, and <i>Symphoricarpos albus</i> are often present. Herbaceous cover is low, but forb species richness is often high. Common forbs include <i>Fragaria virginiana, Galium</i> spp., <i>Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis), Maianthemum stellatum, Senecio triangularis</i> and <i>Thalictrum occidentale</i>.  Accession Code: VB.CC.32246.CEGL005929 Plot-observations of this Community Concept: 0
