Name: Tsuga heterophylla / Rubus pedatus Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is an old-growth evergreen conifer forest restricted to the Pend Oreille River drainage in northeastern Washington. It is associated with upper elevation stream terraces, benches and gentle lower slopes at elevations between 1220 and 1525 m (4000-5000 feet). Soils are humic and highly acidic, have an abundance of large woody debris, and are covered with mosses and lichens. Stands are dominated by Tsuga heterophylla and often with Thuja plicata trees that form a complex vertical canopy. The undergrowth is a mixture of sparse, scattered deciduous shrubs such as Vaccinium membranaceum, Menziesia ferruginea and Lonicera utahensis, with a rich assortment of cool wet site low shrubs, ferns and forbs, such as, Rubus pedatus, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Clintonia uniflora and Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata.
