Name: Saxifraga tolmiei - Luzula piperi Herbaceous Vegetation
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: [From Crawford et al. (2009)]: This association occurs at high elevations on snowbed sites with a very long-lasting snowpack. In subalpine parklands, the association tends to occur on north-facing slopes. In the alpine zone, above treeline, the assoication occurs on gentle to moderate slopes with a greater variety of aspects. The vegetation is sparse, less than 25% total cover, and is characterized by the prominence of Saxifraga tolmiei. Luzula piperi is usually present to prominent in the North Cascades but is less frequent at Mount Rainier. Luetkea pectinata, Carex spectabilis, Carex nigricans, or Juncus drummondii are usually present but are less abundant than Saxifraga tolmiei or Luzula piperi.
