Name: Quercus wislizeni - Quercus chrysolepis Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this woodland are found at dry-mesic sites at low elevations (580-790 m [1900-2600 feet]) on the low to mid portions of generally southwest-facing (at its lower elevation limits it can occur on drier north-facing aspects), moderately steep to steep slopes. Soils are poorly developed and tend to be well-drained sandy loam and from metamorphic and igneous granitic parent material. Invasion from exotic species is high. Litter cover is moderate. Fire is uncommon in these stands. This association forms an open to intermittent tree layer dominated by Quercus wislizeni and Quercus chrysolepis. Toxicodendron diversilobum is usually present in the shrub layer. Found in the herb layer are Avena barbata, Pellaea andromedifolia, and Vulpia myuros. A variety of other species may contribute to minor cover and often include Bromus diandrus, Trifolium microcephalum, Galium parisiense, Hypochaeris glabra, Claytonia perfoliata, Eschscholzia caespitosa, Pentagramma triangularis, Aesculus californica, Artemisia douglasiana, Bromus rubens, Bromus tectorum, Clarkia unguiculata, and Melica imperfecta. Eriophyllum congdonii and Carex tompkinsii are rare species that may occur within this association.
