Name: Purshia tridentata - Artemisia tridentata / Eriogonum umbellatum Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association are found between 2195 and 3080 m (7200-10,100 feet) elevation. Aspects do not seem to differentiate this type. Slopes are moderate to steep, and stands prefer lower slopes and midslopes. Soils are sandy to silt loams derived from granitic and other igneous rock. This vegetation forms an open to intermittent canopy between 0.5-2 m in height. The canopy is dominated by Purshia tridentata usually with Artemisia tridentata codominating. Eriogonum umbellatum is the diagnostic shrub in the subcanopy. Other common shrub associates contributing small amounts of cover may include Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Tetradymia canescens, Prunus andersonii, Eriogonum davidsonii, Leptodactylon pungens, and/or Ribes velutinum. The herbaceous layer is sparse and cover is split fairly equally between graminoids and forbs. The most common forb associates include Lupinus argenteus, Phacelia ramosissima, Eriastrum wilcoxii, Mentzelia congesta, Phacelia bicolor, and/or Stephanomeria exigua. The most common graminoids include Achnatherum hymenoides, Elymus elymoides, and/or Bromus tectorum (exotic).
