Name: Populus tremuloides / Artemisia tridentata / Monardella odoratissima - Kelloggia galioides Forest
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association are found between 2100 and 2710 m (6900-8900 feet) of elevation on northern and eastern aspects. Stands are found on lower to middle, moderate to steep slopes. Soils are moderate to well-drained sandy loams derived from granitic or metamorphic rock. Stands are primarily found east of the Sierra Nevada crest. This association is dominated by Populus tremuloides as a tall shrub or tree. The canopy averages about 18% cover, and varies between 5-10 m in height. Emergent individuals of Pinus contorta are often present. Artemisia tridentata is the dominant shrub with an average cover of 13%. Other common shrub associates include Salix scouleriana, Prunus emarginata, Symphoricarpos rotundifolius, Ceanothus velutinus, and/or Purshia tridentata. Monardella odoratissima and/or Kelloggia galioides each occur in the herbaceous layer. Wyethia mollis is also sometimes present. The graminoids Elymus elymoides and Bromus carinatus are present in every stand.
