Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii / Leucopoa kingii Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is known only from Rocky Mountain National Park where it is found in just a few locations in Rocky Mountain National Park between 2470 and 2790 m (8150-9160 feet) elevation. Stands of this association occupy steep (50-100%), middle to upper slopes facing north and west. Soils are well-drained sandy loams with very little exposed rock. Pseudotsuga menziesii forms a 10- to 15-m tall canopy of 60% cover in this association. Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum is the only other species found in the canopy and occurs in trace amounts, though neighboring stands may be Pinus ponderosa var. scopulorum-dominated. Beneath the canopy, there is no significant shrub layer, only trace amounts of the dwarf-shrubs Physocarpus monogynus and Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana. The herbaceous layer is characterized by 20% cover of Leucopoa kingii and scattered patches of other montane graminoids and forbs.
