Name: Pinus monophylla / Ribes velutinum Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland association is currently only known from the montane regions east of the Sierra Crest Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association is found between 2130 and 2380 m (7000-7800 feet) of elevation on northwest to southeast exposures. Stands prefer moderate to steep lower to upper slopes. Soils are sandy to silty loams. This association has an open canopy of Pinus monophylla 5-10 m in height. Cercocarpus ledifolius often forms a sparse subcanopy. The shrub layer is sparse with Artemisia tridentata, Purshia tridentata, and/or Eriogonum umbellatum. Ribes velutinum is the diagnostic shrub species. The herbaceous layer is dominated by graminoids such as Elymus elymoides, Bromus tectorum (exotic), Melica stricta, Achnatherum hymenoides, and/or Achnatherum speciosum.
