Name:
Pseudotsuga menziesii / Baccharis pilularis Forest

Description:
This forest association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found at low elevations on mid to upper sides of 8- to 25-degree slopes. Soil textures range from loam to coarse loamy sand of shale origin. This association is an early-seral stage of ~Pseudotsuga menziesii - Lithocarpus densiflorus Forest Alliance (A0106)$$ where it is invading stands of Baccharis pilularis. The seral stage of the Baccharis stands being invaded seems to be variable. Some of the Baccharis stands are late seral (e.g., those with much Frangula californica, while others are rather early seral (e.g., those with Ceanothus thyrsiflorus). Certain areas seem to have been rapidly invaded by Pseudotsuga menziesii, while others are more slowly invaded. Local site conditions and stochastic and locally favorable dispersal and establishment events are likely responsible for the variation. Stands of this forest form an open herb layer, an intermittent to continuous shrub layer, and an intermittent to continuous tree layer. It is dominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii and Baccharis pilularis. Toxicodendron diversilobum, Rubus ursinus, and Diplacus aurantiacus (= Mimulus aurantiacus) are also present. Other species that may be present include Ceanothus thyrsiflorus, Quercus agrifolia, Pinus muricata, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Lonicera hispidula, Lonicera involucrata, Marah fabaceus, Marah oreganus, Plantago lanceolata, Ribes californicum, Ribes sanguineum, Sanicula sp., Scrophularia californica, Umbellularia californica, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica), Frangula purshiana (= Rhamnus purshiana), Quercus berberidifolia, and Chlorogalum sp.
