Name: Pinus ponderosa - Juniperus occidentalis / Artemisia tridentata - Purshia tridentata Woodland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This is a woodland association found in the Blue Mountains and eastern Cascades from Oregon and northern California. Stands include all aspects and slopes, with elevations ranging from 1370 to 1830 m (4500-6000 feet) in elevation. Sites are on basalts, andesite or colluvium, with very stony or shallow soils. In the southern Cascades, these woodlands are often on pumice. They are codominated by <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i> and <i>Pinus ponderosa</i>. In the sampled plots, pine dominates the overstory, with between 5 and 50% cover, with juniper having between 1-20% cover in a lower tree layer. Tall shrubs, including <i>Artemisia tridentata (ssp. tridentata, ssp. wyomingensis</i>, and <i>ssp. vaseyana</i> all are reported from stands of this type), <i>Purshia tridentata</i> and <i>Cercocarpus ledifolius</i> are always present, between 1 and 60% cover. Generally, <i>Purshia</i> or <i>Artemisia</i> are codominant, although only one or the other can be present.
