Name: Purshia tridentata - Artemisia tridentata - Tetradymia canescens Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This shrubland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association typically grows on lower slopes that vary from gentle to steep. Aspects are south and east, and elevations range from 2070-2410 m (6800-7900 feet). Soils are sand to silt loams derived from igneous or metamorphic rocks. This association is characterized by an intermittent shrub canopy codominated by Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata and Purshia tridentata with a small amount of Tetradymia canescens. The canopy is generally less than 1 m in height. Trace amounts of several herbaceous species may be present, primarily Lupinus argenteus, Phacelia ramosissima, Castilleja applegatei, and/or Balsamorhiza sagittata. Many graminoid species also provide trace amounts of cover and may include Elymus elymoides, Achnatherum hymenoides, Bromus tectorum (exotic), Hesperostipa comata, and/or Leymus cinereus.
