Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii - Quercus garryana / Symphoricarpos albus Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This is a seral, fire-dependent association, which did not cover an important part of the presettlement landscape until fire suppression. These oak forests became quite widespread over the last 100 years, but are now rapidly declining due to secondary succession, development and other threats. They are currently found along river and stream terraces, at moist sites along the valley floor, and on northern slopes on interior hills or on the foothills of the Willamette Valley. These range from woodlands to semi-closed canopy forests dominated by Quercus garryana and Pseudotsuga menziesii. In most stands, Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings and saplings are more common than Quercus garryana seedlings, and in many the conifers are beginning to overtop the oaks. Symphoricarpos albus is a dominant understory shrub in all communities. Native shrubs (Corylus cornuta, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Amelanchier alnifolia, Oemleria cerasiformis, Holodiscus discolor, Rosa nutkana, Rubus parviflorus, Rubus ursinus) and introduced shrubs (Prunus avium, Crataegus monogyna, Rosa eglanteria, Rubus discolor) provide significant cover, especially in the moister areas. Polystichum munitum is present in most stands, with covers ranging from 15-35%. Other understory forbs include Pteridium aquilinum, Tellima grandiflora, Ligusticum apiifolium. Native grasses are a minor component of this association.
