Name: Pinus contorta var. murrayana / Penstemon newberryi Woodland Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of... Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This woodland is found at high elevations (2620-2955 m [8600-9700 feet]) on moderately steep to somewhat steep slopes (10-20°) that are generally convex in shape. Aspect varies from northeast to west but tends to be west-facing. These sites are usually shallow, well-drained soils formed on granitic parent material. Soils are generally poorly developed and rocky with textures ranging from rocky and gravelly to rocky, gravelly, sandy loam. Fire is common at this association. Stands are characterized by an open overstory tree layer dominated by <i>Pinus contorta</i>. Rarely, <i>Pinus monticola</i> is found contributing minor cover to the tree layer. The herb layer is also open. <i>Penstemon newberryi</i> is constant in the understory based on field verification. However no supporting herbaceous data are available from Wieslander plots. <i>Juncus</i> sp. (probably mostly <i>Juncus parryi)</i> is often present and <i>Carex</i> sp. is occasionally present. A variety of other species may be found contributing to minor cover in the understory shrub and herbaceous layers including <i>Arctostaphylos nevadensis, Chrysolepis sempervirens, Quercus vacciniifolia, Antennaria media (= Antennaria alpina var. media), Spiraea splendens (= Spiraea densiflora), Holodiscus discolor</i>, and <i>Eriogonum umbellatum var. umbellatum</i>.  Accession Code: VB.CC.33169.CEGL002748 Plot-observations of this Community Concept: 0
