Name: Philadelphus lewisii / Symphoricarpos albus Shrubland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This riparian shrubland association is found across the Columbia Basin of Washington and adjacent Oregon. It usually occurs on the upper stream terraces of permanent streams, although it can occur in the active floodplain of intermittent streams. This is a 2- to 6-m (6- to 20-foot) tall shrubland community dominated by Philadelphus lewisii. A short, sparse shrub layer of Symphoricarpos albus appears with an herbaceous understory of primarily grasses, including Elymus glaucus, Poa pratensis, and Bromus tectorum. Other woody species that may appear abundantly are Toxicodendron rydbergii, Rosa nutkana, and Clematis ligusticifolia. This is the most productive of the currently recognized Philadelphus lewisii types.
