Description: This plant association occurs throughout southeastern Alaska where it is widespread on peatlands on flat to gentle slopes at less than 460 m (1500 feet) elevation. This is an open forest wetland with <i>Pinus contorta var. contorta</i> as the main overstory tree averaging 60 feet in height, while <i>Tsuga heterophylla, Tsuga mertensiana</i>, and <i>Picea sitchensis</i> occur in a shrub-like growth form. <i>Vaccinium ovalifolium, Menziesia ferruginea</i>, and <i>Vaccinium uliginosum</i> are abundant shrubs. <i>Lysichiton americanus</i> and <i>Rubus pedatus</i> are common as is <i>Carex aquatilis var. dives (= Carex sitchensis)</i>.
