Name: Pinus albicaulis - Tsuga mertensiana / Mixed Herbaceous Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association are found between 2710 and 3290 m (8900-10,800 feet) of elevation. Slopes are moderate to steep, often concave, and aspects are north and east. Stands grow in cool, moist settings in lower to midslope positions. Soils are generally shallow and poorly to moderately well-developed with textures that range from stony gravel to stony, gravelly, and sandy loam. Soils are well-drained with soil depths ranging from shallow to deep. Parent material is granite. Fire is uncommon and restricted in size. Disturbance levels are usually low at this association. This association is codominated by Pinus albicaulis and Tsuga mertensiana. Ribes montigenum and Salix drummondiana are common shrub associates. The herbaceous understory is quite diverse with a large variety of forbs and graminoids. Total herbaceous cover averages 20%. Common forbs include Selaginella watsonii, Antennaria rosea, Phyllodoce breweri, Sedum obtusatum, Phlox diffusa, Penstemon newberryi, Cryptogramma acrostichoides, Antennaria rosea, Elymus elymoides ssp. californicus, and/or Arabis platysperma . Graminoids may include Carex filifolia, Carex rossii, Juncus parryi, and/or Trisetum spicatum.
