Description: This giant forest association is found in the Klamath Mountains in southern Oregon and may also occur in California. Elevations range from 700-1130 m (2300-3700 feet). Sites are on northeast to northwest aspects with slopes averaging 54%. Soils are derived from metavolcanic, schists, metasediment, andesite and basaltic parent material. <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> is the only tree to occur at most sites and has an average cover of 72%. The tree understory is characterized by <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> (50%), <i>Arbutus menziesii</i> (5%), and <i>Acer macrophyllum</i> (45%). The shrub layer totals 64% and is typified by <i>Mahonia nervosa (= var. nervosa)</i> (23%), <i>Rosa gymnocarpa</i> (6%), and <i>Corylus cornuta var. cornuta</i> (8%). Herbs include <i>Trientalis borealis ssp. latifolia (= Trientalis latifolia)</i> (4%) and <i>Prosartes hookeri (= Disporum hookeri)</i> (2%).
