Name: Pinus jeffreyi / Quercus vacciniifolia - Arctostaphylos nevadensis Woodland
Reference: Western Ecology Working Group of...
Description: This association is currently known from only one area in the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon. These woodlands are found at low elevations (averaging 683 m or 2240 feet), on stony (51% cover of surface rock), gravelly (25-33%) serpentine or peridotite soils. The soils are typical, red serpentine clays. Aspects and slopes are variable. This is a woodland, dominated by Pinus jeffreyi (averaging 15% cover), Pseudotsuga menziesii (10% cover), and Pinus attenuata (7% cover). The shrub cover is moderate and variable, with Umbellularia californica at average cover of 18% forming a tall-shrub layer, and Quercus vacciniifolia (22% cover), Arctostaphylos nevadensis (8% cover), Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica) (4%) at about 1 m tall, and Ceanothus pumilus (3%) as an evergreen shrub ground cover. Forbs are generally present, with Carex spp., Zigadenus micranthus, Aspidotis densa, Galium ambiguum, Lomatium macrocarpum, and Achillea millefolium found in most stands.
